Bonbons & Cameos

In their reductive abstract work Louise Blyton and Richard van der Aa tend to mine a territory between painting and sculpture. They find a fruitful tension there. Though both are painters, the work is never simply an image for the third dimension is often brought into play as a concrete element. We are presented with a three dimensional image which is not an illusion of space but exists in ours.
Questions are raised – about the fundamental qualities of painting. Does a painter create images or objects? Is the painting necessarily one thing or the other or can the result of painterly action perhaps be both simultaneously?

Richard van der Aa is a New Zealander currently based in Paris. He is a painter interested in creating convincing presence with the simplest possible means.
